Mast House Terrace site, 1984

Mast House Terrace gets its name from a large mast-making works and associated Mast House built in the 18th century. Part of the site, known as Napier Yard, was leased to the shipbuilder John Scott Russell in 1853 as the building site of I K Brunel's iron steamship, Great Eastern, launched in 1858. From the mid-1880s it was occupied by the engineering firm of Joseph Westwood & Company, an internationally important manufacturer of constructional iron-and steelwork.

The site was reclaimed in the early 1980s on behalf of the LDDC by Taylor Woodrow Construction Ltd. and their subcontractor, Ladkarn.
